Candle Magic for Courage & Change

Why an Orange Flame Carries You Through Transition

Every witch worth her salt keeps a candle nearby for the moments life won't wait — the interview tomorrow, the move across the state, the door closing so another can open. Orange is the color I reach for when I need to walk through a threshold instead of standing frozen in front of it.

Why Orange, Why Now

Orange sits between red and yellow on the wheel, and it borrows from both. Red brings the fire — the push, the nerve, the willingness to move. Yellow brings the clear head — the plan, the words, the wit to navigate whatever's changing. Put them together and you get a candle built for exactly the moments when you need both: the courage to act and the sense to act wisely.

That's the heart of it. Orange candle work isn't for calm, settled seasons. It's for thresholds — new jobs, sudden moves, hard conversations, anything where the ground is shifting under your feet and you need a little fire lit under your own resolve.

Courage & Change Candle Ritual

What You Need

  • 1 orange candle — any size works. I'll say it before anyone else does: I use birthday candles. They burn fast, and they come in more colors than you'd think, including black when the working calls for it.
  • Cinnamon powder, for protection and prosperity
  • A small piece of carnelian or citrine, if you have one
  • Paper and pen
  • Your favorite tarot deck

The Working

  1. Write down the change you're facing or seeking on the paper.
  2. Sprinkle cinnamon around the base of the candle.
  3. Hold the candle and speak your intention aloud:
"Flame of courage, light my way.
Give me strength for this new day.
As seasons change, so do I.
With brave heart, I will fly high."
  4. Light the candle and gaze into the flame for about five minutes, picturing a warm orange light filling your chest and steadying your nerve.
  5. Pull three tarot cards, asking in turn: What do I release? What do I embrace? How do I move forward with courage?
Power Tip Let a small candle burn all the way down in one sitting. If you're working with something larger, burn it for the same stretch of time across several days, holding the same intention each time. Save the leftover wax as a courage charm to carry with you.

Change doesn't ask permission, and it rarely waits for us to feel ready. That's what the orange flame is for — not to make the fear disappear, but to give you something warm to hold while you walk through it anyway.

From the Flame Light does not wait for courage to arrive first.
It simply burns, and courage follows the light.
As the wax gives itself to the fire,
so the old way gives itself to the new.
