Witches Ladder

A Spellcounting Puzzle, Knotted One Rung at a Time

A witches' ladder is an old charm — a cord knotted rung by rung, each knot binding the working a little tighter. This puzzle borrows that rhythm. A 9x9 grid holds one unbroken cord of numbers from 1 to 81, each rung resting directly beside the one before and after it — up, down, left, or right, never diagonal. A few knots are already tied — the rest is yours to work into place.

How It Works

Every square in the grid belongs to one continuous cord of consecutive numbers — 1, 2, 3, and onward to 81 — where each step lands in the square directly beside the last, never diagonally. The gold-lit squares are the knots already tied for you. Click any open square, then choose a number from the pad that appears, and watch the ladder reveal itself. Full instructions live inside the game — look for the "How to Play" button.

The Goal

Fill every empty square with a number from 1 to 81 so the whole grid forms one unbroken chain: each number sits directly beside the number before it and the number after it — up, down, left, or right. No diagonal moves.

How to Play

  • Click any empty square to select it.
  • A number pad appears below the grid — tap the number you want to place.
  • Click a filled square again to change or clear it.
  • The gold squares are your given clues and cannot be changed.

Difficulty

  • Easy — many clues are already placed; mostly connecting the dots.
  • Medium — a moderate scattering of clues.
  • Hard — only a handful of anchors; the rest is deduction.

Buttons

  • Check — highlights every filled square in green (correct) or red (incorrect) without revealing the answer.
  • Clear — wipes all of your entries and keeps the given clues.
  • New Puzzle — ties a brand-new ladder from scratch at the current difficulty. No two boards are ever the same.

Tip: work outward from 1 and from 81 at the same time — the middle of the path is usually easiest to pin down last.

There is no reading here, no message pulled from the deck — just the cord, the count, and the small satisfaction of a ladder finished knot by knot. Sometimes the working needs that kind of quiet, too.

From the Sun Chapter Not all binding comes from cord and knot.
Some of it comes from simply counting your steps.
