The Zodiac vs. Calendar Months
The zodiac isn't based on our calendar at all. It tracks the Sun's path across the sky as Earth orbits around it, a path divided into 12 equal sections of 30 degrees each, one for every sign. The Sun spends roughly 30 days moving through each section.
Our calendar months are something else entirely: arbitrary divisions of 28 to 31 days, set by ancient Roman decisions with no tie to astronomy. Naturally, they don't line up.
What About the Moon?
The Moon runs on its own, much faster clock.
Lunar Phase Cycle
From new moon to full moon and back again takes about 29.5 days — the rhythm behind our calendar month.
Zodiac Transit
The Moon's trip through all 12 signs takes only 27 to 28 days, spending just 2 to 3 days in each one.
That's why astrologers say things like "the Moon is in Scorpio today" — it moves fast, and it doesn't wait around.
Two Systems, One Sky
There are actually two different zodiac systems in use today, and they sit about 24 days apart.
Western / Tropical Astrology
- Tied to Earth's seasons, not the actual positions of the stars
- The spring equinox is always fixed at "0 degrees Aries"
- This is the system behind most horoscopes people read
Sidereal / Vedic Astrology
- Tracks the true, current positions of the constellations
- Accounts for the slow wobble of Earth's axis, called precession
- Because Earth has been wobbling for over 2,000 years, the constellations have drifted back by nearly a full sign since this system was fixed
Western astrology froze the zodiac at its ancient position and tied it to the seasons. Sidereal astrology keeps updating to track the stars as they actually sit tonight. The gap between the two grows by about 1 degree every 72 years, so it will keep widening.
The Comparison Chart
Both systems work — they're simply measuring different things. Western is seasonal and solar. Sidereal is stellar. Here's how the dates line up right now:

it only keeps moving.
