The Willow's Medicine

A Creek-Bank Memory & a Bitter, Healing Tea

My grandmother used to tell me about a little girl who needed to get away from the hustle and bustle of the house — how she would slip down to the bank of the creek and hide beneath the willow, tucked safe behind its curtain of leaves. Come winter, when the branches iced over, they froze into a crystal palace all her own. I spent so many hours out of grandma's hair down at that creek, off in my own imaginary kingdom — and no matter how hidden I thought I was, she always somehow knew exactly where to find me.

The Tree That Bends but Never Breaks

Long before the medicine cabinet held anything with a label on it, our people turned to the willow. Her branches bend low over the water without snapping — and it is that same bending, unbreaking nature that she lends to a body in pain. For more than 2,400 years, the white willow's inner bark has whispered her pain-relieving secrets to those wise enough to listen, offering her bitter medicine to soothe inflamed joints and fevered brows.

The white willow's inner bark carries nature's own aspirin-like compounds, but unlike the synthetic kind, this plant ally works in harmony with the body's own rhythms. Each cup of this earthy brew carries the wisdom of countless healers before us, who understood that sometimes the most powerful medicine comes wrapped in humble tree bark.

Let the ancient wisdom of the willow flow through you, bending but never breaking. And if you ever need to disappear for an afternoon the way a little girl once did behind a curtain of leaves, know that the willow will keep your hiding place just as well now as she did then.

From the Creek Bank Some trees give shade.
Some trees give medicine.
And some trees simply hold a place for you,
long after you've grown too tall to hide there.
